Opera Nova Scotia is very young. We have a bold mandate to perform quality opera
and become the only permanent professional opera company in Atlantic
Canada. We have been extremely successful to date; nearly every
single event we have ever produced has been sold out. In 2004, we
took a grand step forward: we mounted the first fully-staged
grand opera seen in Halifax in thirty years.
There is no way of getting around it; opera is expensive. Why?
Because all the muses of the performing arts are rolled into one
beautiful, inspiring package.
Former Artistic
Director Edward Rhodes put it this way, as quoted in the Chronicle-Herald:
| "The
great thing about opera, is that it's big. It's big emotions,
big passion, big scenery, big music. Opera is theatre. It's
an all-encompassing art form." |
Former Music
Director Jason Parkhill agreed, as quoted in the Coast’s
“Fifty People to Watch in 2002”:
| "Opera
is the most powerful form of communication one can have with
a stranger. You can have someone come in off the street and
be caught up in their lives, and they can be immediately transported
and have their heart touched. You can get angry, jealous,
sad and amused in a very profound and heartfelt way." |
We
believe opera is worth every penny. We stand firmly behind our
product, confident that the splendor and quality of our work will
be appreciated by every person involved. We need your help. Every
dollar makes a difference.
